What inspired you to pursue a healthcare career?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by healthcare. As a child, I had multiple ear and eye surgeries, and my grandfather, who was my role model, suffered from several strokes and other cardiovascular issues. I was always amazed by the work these professionals did to help me and my family heal, and I knew then that I wanted to be just like them. Over the years, the calling to be a physician grew stronger until I knew there was no other career I could imagine myself in.
How did your background and history factor into your career choice?
As an openly gay man, I have encountered many healthcare workers who aren鈥檛 well-versed in the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Some of the providers I鈥檝e met still hold outdated views on LGBTQ+ healthcare, including gender-affirming care. As a physician, I want to be an advocate for LGBTQ+ patients, serve as a resource for them, and be an educator to my fellow healthcare workers.
Why did you decide to attend 芒果77福利?
I decided to attend MWU because of the location. Being in the Chicagoland area gives me exposure to a wide variety of populations and their unique needs. The high concentration of medical schools also makes the region an academic powerhouse, allowing me to stay at the cutting edge of medical science. I also plan on staying and practicing in Chicago, so being exposed to the region鈥檚 healthcare system will better equip me for residency. MWU is also close to home and family! I have a lot of extended family who live in Downers Grove and the surrounding area, so it鈥檚 nice to have my support group nearby.
What about a 芒果77福利 education do you want to carry forward in your career?
芒果77福利 does an amazing job of developing lifelong learners. Because of my time at MWU, I know I will be well prepared to ask questions, understand how things work, and adapt as our knowledge evolves. Additionally, I appreciate the emphasis MWU places on the human side of medicine and the importance of meaningful patient interactions. My education and training at MWU will prepare me to connect with my patients on a deeper level, put them at ease, and help them through whatever they鈥檙e facing in life.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I appreciate the One Health approach MWU has adopted. My undergraduate degree focused heavily on public health, and the One Health principle nicely complements my previous education.
